Subject Evan Roth Newsletter: March 2016: Greetings all, and welcome to a long overdue newsletter. This email includes updates on a new series of work that I am releasing across several exhibitions, including a solo show that opens tomorrow (Thursday, March 31st) in Stockholm; the Biennale of Sydney; and, the Black Chamber exhibition in Ljubljana. Information on this work is below, along with details on an article I wrote for the Guardian, a new grant and my latest yearly mixtape download. 1) Solo exhibition at Belenius/Nordenhake: My solo show Kites & Websites opens this Thursday (March 31st) at Belenius/Nordenhake in Stockholm. This show is an extension of ideas I've been developing since last year's Voices Over the Horizon exhibition at Carroll/Fletcher in London. It is composed of landscape imagery captured at fiber optic landing locations in Sweden, New Zealand and France. It's an exhibition that I am very excited about and is the result of many months of learning new skills (namely network server administration and sewing) and solitary expeditions into nature. The exhibition text, written by Domenico Quaranta, can be viewed here: http://beleniusnordenhake.com/exhibitions/kites-and-websites/ Documentation of the exhibition should be available on the gallery's website in the days following the opening. I am also working on a publication in connection with the exhibition. The book is being co-published by Belenius/Nordenhake and Aksioma, and will include a longer text by Domenico. I will be back in Stockholm for the launch of the book on April 19th. 2) Biennale of Sydney: March 18th marked the opening of the 20th Biennale of Sydney and the release of a newly commissioned series of 11 network located video pieces I created. The work, titled "Internet Landscapes: Sydney", is the result of seven days spent dodging large spiders, lizards and police while exploring Internet fiber optic landing locations surrounding Sydney. The pieces can be viewed online here: http://landscapes.biennaleofsydney.com.au. For more information about the background of the project, there are articles here: http://mashable.com/2016/03/15/evan-roth-biennale-sydney/#BXNm6j1Eiuq7 And here: http://hyperallergic.com/283973/a-pioneering-net-artist-mourns-the-unfulfilled-promise-of-the-internet/ 3) Black Chamber / Masters and Servers commission: The first piece in this series of network located videos was made possible through a Masters & Servers commission, which is a joint collaboration among Aksioma, Drugo, Link Art Center, Abandon Normal Devices and d-i-n-a. The commission allowed me to spend time filming at fiber optic landing locations along the coasts outside of Stockholm and Gothenburg. The resulting piece is online (http://n57.680235e11.668160.se) and now on display at the Black Chamber exhibition in Ljubljana, which was curated by Eva & Franco Mattes and Bani Brusadin (http://aksioma.org/black.chamber/). I'm proud to be included in the exhibition, which has stand-out installations by Jill Magid and Simon Denny. A talk I gave to mark the opening of the exhibition can be viewed here: https://vimeo.com/160440014 Photos of the installation can be seen here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/aksioma-org/25476558070/in/album-72157665922303505/ The piece will travel next to the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rijeka as part of the Networked Disruption exhibition from April 23 to May 14, 2016. 4) Electronic Superhighway (2016 - 1966) at the Whitechapel Gallery: I have a new Internet Cache Self Portrait now on display at the Omar Kholeif-curated Electronic Superhighway exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery in London. I've never stood in one room and been surrounded by so many of my friends and heroes before. If you are in London at any point before May 15, 2016, I highly recommend a visit. My installation can be seen here: http://cdn.c.photoshelter.com/img-get2/I0000RTfqDnSRm68/fit=1000x750/Whitechapel-Electronic-GBPhotos-30.jpg And an article I wrote for the Guardian in relation to the exhibition can be read here: http://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2016/jan/04/e-is-for-electronic-what-does-the-internet-look-like-to-you Related press: http://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2016/jan/29/electronic-superhighway-review-we-are-all-post-internet-now http://thequietus.com/articles/19909-electronic-superhighway-whitechapel-gallery-review 5) Creative Capital grant: I'm excited to report that this year I am a recipient of a Creative Capital grant in the emerging fields category. Creative Capital is an organization that provides support to artists in very interesting and thoughtful ways (that extend beyond just monetary). Much of my current and upcoming Landscapes series will fall under their umbrella and the grant gives me the opportunity to film at some more distant locations (most likely South Africa, China and Brazil among other places) over the course of the next two years. You can read more about Creative Capital grants here: http://www.artnews.com/2016/01/12/creative-capitals-2016-awardees/ 6) Mixtape: For those that may have missed the link on social media, my latest (and 10th annual!) year end mixtape can be downloaded here: http://www.evan-roth.com/sandbox/xmix/vol10/Into-This-Device-Xmix-Vol10.mp3 Thanks as always for your continued interest in my work. All the best, Evan
